Cresswell Quay Conservation Area Designation

BABB Architects are delighted to be involved in the designation of the new Cresswell Quay Conservation Area in Pembrokeshire. The brief is to lead on the designation of Cresswell Quay as a Conservation Area and to produce an appraisal and management plan for the Authority to adopt as supplementary planning guidance

Cresswell Quay is nestled in a steep sided wooded valley containing the upper tidal reaches of the Cresswell River. It grew out of the use of the quayside within the village and an early coal industry. Houses and cottages built for and by workers in the industry produced a distinctive settlement pattern and vernacular architecture, and a village developed at the quayside. The area is of outstanding historical importance, retaining much evidence of its past enjoys a enjoys a delightful riverside setting. The village includes two scheduled ancient monuments and a number of listed buildings and is adjacent to a Registered Historic Parks and Garden.

As part of this commission Linda carried out field work, identifying the special interest of the area through an assessment of its character and appearance. Boundary and character areas were identified as well as positive buildings, important views and trees and woodland important to the setting. Areas important to the setting and character were also identified. A proposed boundary for the new designated conservation area was proposed and has now been adopted by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

Slate hanging, Grade II Listed house, Tenby

This project involved introducing slate hanging to the rear and side elevation of a Grade II listed building. The house was subject to the prevailing weather and needed better protection. Planning and Lisgted Building Consent was required as well as Building REgulation Approval.  Care was taken to detail the various junctions on quite a busy rear elevation.

The following provides  information on a selection of other projects which Linda and Rhodri have worked on, evidencing their experience. As BABB Architects is a new practice, projects that were undertaken at Acanthus Holden (AH), their previous practice, are acknowledged. For each project their roles are described.

Penrhiw Priory Hotel, St Davids, Pembrokeshire

This scheme was the restoration and conversion of Penrhiw Priory in St Davids for the Retreats Group. The project involved the conversion of a Grade II listed building to a hotel. This building was originally built as a vicarage in 1882-1884 and had since been used as a convent and a retreat. In the 1960’s a number of unsympathetic extensions were added. As part of the scheme these were demolished, and the lost part of the elevation restored. Involvement was from inception to completion.
