Education

 

Linda and Rhodri of BABB Architects have experience of working on education projects, having worked on:

  • 3 new primary schools,
  • a refurbishment of a secondary school to form a new primary school,
  • refurbishment of a secondary block of classrooms,
  • classroom extensions, and
  • new windows and other works to a Further Education college.

The following is a selection of projects which Rhodri and Linda have worked on over the last 5 years. For each project the role of each person is described. As BABB Architects is a new practice, these projects were undertaken at their previous practice (Acanthus Holden) and this is acknowledged.

FORMER YSGOL PANTYCELYN (2019-2021)

This project involved the conversion of a former secondary school to a new 240 pupil primary school in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire.  RIBA Stages 4 to 7 under a Design and Build contract. Stage 3 designs had been completed by Carmarthenshire County Council. Project cost in the region of £4.3. million.

YSGOL GORSLAS, GORSLAS, (2019-2022)

This is a new eight classroom, timber frame, two storey primary school at Gorslas. Stage 4 information was designed using Revit, (BIM). It was commissioned by Lloyd and Gravell under a Design and Build Contract for Carmarthenshire County Council.  Stage 3 designs had been completed by Carmarthenshire County Council. The school has been designed to Passivhaus Standards being very highly insulated and having extremely low running costs. For Passivhaus standards it needed to achieve an airtightness level of 0.6 at 50Pa. It well exceeded this. After a challenging period on site due to the pandemic, the school was completed in 2022 and the children moved in at the start of the school year.

YSGOL Y CASTELL, KIDWELLY, (2019-23)

Lead designer for Stage 4 -7 of a new timber frame, two-storey, £7.4 million primary school at Kidwelly. Stage 3 designs had been completed by Carmarthenshire County Council. The school includes classrooms, community hall and school distribution kitchen. The school has been designed to Passivhaus standards and Passivhaus Certification is expected shortly. The pupils moved into the school in November 2022.

PEMBREY SCHOOL

This project is for a new eight classroom timber frame, two storey primary school at Pembrey, with commercial kitchen. Stage 3 designs had been completed by Carmarthenshire County Council. The role was from Stage 4 onwards. The school has been designed to Passivhaus Standards and is currently on site.

PEMBROKESHIRE COLLEGE, REPLACEMENT WINDOWS, (2021-23)

This project was a three-year programme of enhancement and renewal of the Curtain Walling Facade and Windows to contribute toward the College aim of achieving Welsh Governments Carbon Net Zero 2030 Reporting Guidelines for the Public Sector. The scheme also involved PV installation to roofs. Years 1 and 2 complete and Stage 4 for Year 3 were completed by Rhodri and Linda.
